In the BEGINNING.....
Welcome to The POP Art Gallery and Handmade Boutique Blog!!! We are an online startup boutique looking to build our empire into a brick and mortar serving Northern California. We offer artwork from artist all over the North Western United States. We also create and retail up cycled, vintage and unique furniture items and home décor. But, that’s not all this Blog is about….
Three months ago, I was a Director at a mid-sized non-profit, running the biggest and most prestigious location within the agency. Although I found the day-to-day interactions with the folks we served extremely rewarding, the pressures of the corporate structure, that I was now a lead representative of, became daunting. I found myself dealing with depression and anxiety on a level and scale that I had never experienced before. I took a leave of absence from my agency to attend to my medical needs. During this time I cleaned and organized my entire house, redecorated my living room, dinning room, and kids rooms (90% of it with items I created myself, from my home, with little to no budget at all), and discovered that I have a real love for art. I found these things not only to be rewarding, but also therapeutic, OMG was I falling in love with something that I could do?????
So after a ton of soul searching, counseling, self love and self care, I made the decision to not continue on the corporate latter, to step out on faith, trust the Lord, my family and most importantly, myself. The revelation came one day, while I was finishing up a wine bar cabinet for my living room….
See during all that soul searching, I also did a lot of talking to God (I know, not everyone believes, but hear me out). I asked him to ease my suffering, to show me something I could do to support my family and practice my talents and skills that He has given me. Now, I’m not what you would call “a Super Religious Person”, in fact the last church I was in, had to be about 3-4 year ago, when I attended a community food bank meeting for my agency. I know, pathetic right? But having been raised in the Methodist faith, I have never forgotten that there is something bigger and greater than myself, that is with you at all times and loves you more than you love yourself. Some call it God, others Ali, Buddha, or maybe even the universe. I’m not here to argue what to call Him, or It, just to say that it DOES exist.
So back to the cabinet, after making my plea for relief, I began to notice butterflies near my home and near my car when traveling. Sounds crazy, but those of us in Northern California know how rare it is to see 2-3 butterflies a year, let alone dozens in a week. They were mainly small white butterflies, and then mid sized Monarch butterflies. One day, while working on the cabinet in my Garage, my middle daughter K, says to me, “Mommy, butterfly.” To which I replied, “Where?” She then proceeded to point to the tree in my front yard, illuminating my awareness to a large 6 inch or bigger yellow black and multi colored butterfly, that had perched itself in our tree. This is the largest butterfly I have ever seen, that was not in captivity.
I freaked! Couldn’t get my phone camera was dead! I ran in the house, told my mother-in-law what was going on and grabbed my iPad. But I never use that camera before, I use my phone!!!!! And yet the butterfly continued to perch. I got it all figured out and was ready to take the photo, and of course, right then, it flew away!!!!BUMMER!!! But what a beautiful site. I knew in that moment that God and the universe had heard my plea. This is what I was meant and needed to do!!!!
So here we are. This blog will focus on DIY’s for your home and your closet, current looks and trends and how to get them for less. It will feature my work and the work of the amazing artist the consign their works with me.
So welcome to the beginning , thank you for being here! I can’t wait to show the world what can be done with a little elbow grease, faith and determination. Hang on, cause it’s going to be a bumpy ride!!!
